Victor Gilels, 91, died Thursday in Lake Worth, FL with his loving wife, Harlene, by his side. He had been a life resident of Syracuse until 1995, when he and Harlene moved to Florida. Victor was a practicing optician, having graduated from the Chicago School of Optometry; was the former owner of Onondaga Optical and then HG Optical. In Florida, Victor was associated with LensCrafters, where he proudly worked until his retirement in 2008. Victor was so well respected by LensCrafters that he received honors by the company that were reflected in a periodical that was distributed throughout the United States. He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of Onondaga Post 131 Jewish War Veterans, Philo-Mt. Sinai Lodge, the Shriners and Temple Adath Yeshrun. Victor had a zest for life. He loved music and sports of all kinds, and he had a keen mind for sports and music trivia. He was an avid golfer, and was a member of LaFayette CC for many years, and also The Fountains CC of Lake Worth. He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh, his love of food and especially his love of his home town, Syracuse. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harlene; their children, Michael (Belinda); Deborah and Lisa; granddaughters, Julia and Lily; brothers, Elliot (Joan), Jerome, and Lionel (Jackie); sisters, Laberta (Daniel) Forman, and Georgeanne (Arthur) Burke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 5 at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service on Monday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Funeral Chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Frumah Packard Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Temple Adath Yeshurun, the SPCA, or any charity of one\\\'s choice.
