Irving S. Devorsetz, age 63, of 969 James St., attorney and widely active officer of Onondaga County public health associations, died Dec. 1, 1966, in Phelps Memorial Hospital, Tarrytown, from complications of emphysema. Mr. Devorsetz left Syracuse on Wed. Nov. 25 for a Thanksgiving visit to his daughter, Mrs. Amy Eliezer in Osining, New York. He was stricken Friday and admitted to Phelps Memorial Hospital. Born in New York City, Mr. Devorsetz lived in Syracuse, NY most of his life. He graduated from Syracuse Central High School, from the Syracuse University College of Liberal Arts, Class of 1923, and from the Universitys College Class of 1924. Mr. Devorsetz was admitted in the New York State Bar in 1925. Mr. Devorsetz was a member of the board of the Onondaga Health Association, chairman of its tuberculosis committee and member of the board of managers of the Onondaga County Sanatorium. Mr. Devorsetz was also a member and former director of the Onondaga County, Bar Association and was affiliated with the New York State and American Bar Associations. He was a member of the committee on continuing legal education of the NYS Bar Association. During his long history of public service, Mr. Devorsetz was also an examiner for the Public Service Commission, a member of the Syracuse Housing Authority and Secretary of the Citizens Committee of the Board of Supervisors recommending state acquisition of the Onondaga Sanatorium. Mr. Devorsetz established the Irving S. Devorsetz Scholarship Fund for a Negro student in the Syracuse University College of Law. Mr. Devorsetz was a member of the Temple Society of Concord. He was a veteran of World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Davis Devorsetz; two children, Sidney Devorsetz of Syracuse, NY and Mrs. Amy Eliezer of Ossining; his mother, Mrs. Dora Devorsetz; a brother Harold Devorsetz; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Whitehouse of Miami, FL, and Mrs. Lillian Goldsand and three grandchildren.
